November 2015 Teaching Letter - Light Overcomes Darkness

John 1:1-5
John 1:4” In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” The word “life” here is the word “zoe” in the Greek, and it means “life” as God would have it. The life is the light. John 1:5”And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” The word “comprehends” means to overcome, to seize or lay hold of. The darkness does not overcome, lay hold of, seize, or gain control of the light. Another meaning of the word “comprehend” is to perceive or lay hold of with mental or moral effect. The darkness does not understand it. A third meaning of the word “comprehend” is to quench or extinguish or to snuff out. The darkness will never be able to eliminate it-the light. Where there is light there is no darkness. A natural example is when you come into a room that is dark and you turn on the lights, and the darkness disappears.
Jesus is the light. John 1:16 “And of his fullness have we all received and grace for grace.” The word "fullness" in the Greek means full in measure and completeness. The word describes a ship with full cargo and crew or a town with no empty houses. Everyplace Jesus went, if there was darkness, He overcame and dispelled that darkness. The word “darkness” in the Greek means gloom, evil, sin, obscurity, night, ignorance, or moral depravity. Spiritual darkness describes everything earthly or demonic that opposes the kingdom of God. John 812 “I am the light of the world, he that follows me shall not walk in darkness.” John 9:5 “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 12:46 I am come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness.”
Colossians 1:13 “Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.” As people of the kingdom we have been translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light with all power, ability, completeness, and spiritual adequacy not only to live victoriously over and above darkness, but to stamp it out and extinguish it ourselves. Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on the hill cannot be hidden.” Remember, Jesus said as long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. Physically, Jesus is here in His body. We are the light of the world. Ephesians 5:30 tells us that we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. We are to rule over darkness, that is, physical, mental, spiritual, and moral corruptness. How? The answer is Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men , that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” If we have the light, Jesus, and we are the light of the world, then why are Christians still in darkness? Why all the moral failures, depression, oppression, mental torment and spiritual defeat?
Jesus is the Word-the life, the light. Romans 12:1-2 tell us that transformation comes by the renewing of the mind. It is not the amount of information a person has, but the degree of information a person is acting on and putting into practice. 2Peter 1:2-4 “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power has given them to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that has called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” John 8:31-32 "If you continue in my word, then you are my disciples indeed; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” Matthew 7:24-27 tells us of a man who hears the word of God and does the word. He is like a man who built his house on the rock. The floods, the storms, the winds came and his house does not fall because it’s founded on the rock. There was another man who built his house on the sand. He hears the word but he does not do it. The same winds, storms, and floods come, but his house falls because it is not founded on the rock, but on sand. He is a hearer, but not a doer of the word. James 1:21-25 tell us the same thing. So the level or degree that we do the word of God, will be the level or degree that the kingdom of God is manifested in and through our lives.
Jesus said the prince of darkness has nothing in me. Jesus said, when I come, darkest must flee. At Nain, a woman's son was being carried off in a funeral procession. Jesus touched the coffin. The dead son sat up. Why? Because death is darkness. Jesus is the light. When darkness comes in contact with light, the darkness bows to the light. The devil is the prince of darkness. Jesus said, I only do what I see my Father do. He went into every city and healed all the sick that were there. So sickness is darkness. James 1:17” Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, nor shadow of turning.” 2Corinthians 4:6-7 “For it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shown in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us.”
Jesus said I am the light of the world and as long as I’m here I’ll show you how the light works. Rise, take up your bed and walk, go wash in the pool of Siloam, your sins are forgiven you, go, your daughter is made whole. What manner of man is this? He is the light, which is the life, which is the power, which is God. That same God that said that, has shined that light in our heart. Now we have that treasure of everything of the life of God in earthen vessels, to bring life and light to those in darkness, which is God Himself. When we bring Him, that life, remember it is from God. No credit to us. Jesus gets the glory. He is the Healer, he’s the Deliverer, He’s the light and the life. Glory to God!
