March Teaching Letter - Covenant or Testament?

Do we have a covenant with Almighty God or a testament? What is the difference, and does it matter? I believe that it is the difference between freedom and bondage. The focus of each is entirely different. One is effort. The other is rest. Hebrews 8:6”But now has he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant established upon better promises.” A “mediator” is the middle person that sees to it that the contract between parties stays fulfilled. 1John 2:1-2”My little children, these things I write unto you, that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our’s only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” An advocate is one who will intercede for us.
Hebrews 7:22”By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. The words testament and covenant are used interchangeably, but their meaning is entirely different. The Old Covenant was a joint obligation. It was totally dependent upon our obedience. The New Testament was a single obligation of one party, that being Jesus. It is totally dependent on Jesus’ obedience. I wholeheartedly believe that we as Christians are to obey God. However, our obedience is a not a means to God doing anything in our life. Our obedience is a result of what Jesus obedience got us. Everything in the Old Covenant Law was if you do this , then God will do that. If you do not do this, then not only will God not do for you, but you will be cursed with sickness, poverty and even death. Jesus fulfilled the Old Covenant. He was the only one that could do that. Now the covenant is between God the Father and Jesus. It cannot ever be broken because Jesus said “it is finished”, and God the Father said “it is enough.” What we have is a will or a testament, freely given to us as a result of Jesus’ obedience to go to the cross and become the perfect sacrifice for all humanity.
Here is a statement made by many today and it is wrong. “God will do anything for you if you will do anything for Him.” No, that is covenant. Another false statement is “what God has provided by grace, we must appropriate by faith.” What people mean is that I have to have faith to get what God promised. No, I got it all when I got born-again. My faith in Jesus got me Him, the kingdom. I don’t have to have faith for anything that already belongs to me. Here is another false statement. All the promises of God are conditional. Wrong again. The conditions were met by Jesus at Calvary. Now, I just need to find out what Jesus bought and paid for with His blood (redemption) because I became a partaker of all of Him and His kingdom when I became a son of God. Romans 8:32”He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also FREELY GIVE US ALL THINGS?” Everything is a gift that comes by way of Calvary. Our part is not to have faith for, be obedient to, or do anything to get God to do anything. Testament says I have believed, I have received, now act like it is so.
If our thinking is wrong then our believing will be wrong which will result in wrong speaking and acting. Are we blessed because we obey or do we obey because we are already blessed? It is the same with healing, deliverance, or prosperity. I am not trying to get any of these. Jesus gave it to me as a free gift! Righteousness is right doing. Who did the right doing? Jesus did! Am I righteous because of what I do or am I righteous because I have believed in the one that did the right doing? 2Corinthians 5:21”For he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Is my righteousness earned or imputed? Romans 5:1-2”Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom we have access into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Romans 5:17”For if by one man’s offense death reigned by one (Adam): much more they which RECEIVE ABUNDANCE OF GRACE and of the GIFT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS SHALL REIGN IN LIFE BY ONE, JESUS CHRIST.” Now that we have freely received, we can freely partake and freely give away Him, divine life, the person of the Holy Spirit anywhere, anytime to anyone.
