February 2014 Teaching Letter - The Spirit Ruled Mind
1Corinthians 2:16 We have the mind of Christ
Proverbs 23:7 As a man thinks so is he.
Romans 12:1-2 We are transformed by the renewing of our minds.
God’s intention from the beginning apart from restoring us to intimacy and oneness with Himself was to save us from three main things. 1)Sin and the consequences of sin. (sickness, poverty and premature death) 2) The devil. 1John 3:8. 3) Self or the natural or soulish man. When Adam committed high treason against God in the beginning, his spirit took on the nature of rebellion, iniquity, and became spiritually estranged from Almighty God.
Verse 1 And you has he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Verse 2 Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience:
Verse 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Adam became a soul or natural man. When the Bible talks about being fleshly or carnal for the most part it is not talking about your body. When the Bible talks about carnality it is talking about your thinking that causes us to act in a certain way. See 2Cor. 10:3-5; 2Cor. 5:7; 1Cor. 3:3. Adams body did not change when he sinned. He was in a flesh and blood body before he sinned and in a flesh and blood body after he sinned. The effect that the rebellious spirit had on the totality of man was:
1) The body began to die, that is, it was subject to sickness and disease.
a) Man’s body was meant to sustain him perpetually or eternally. His body was never destined to die.
b) That’s why that when we are born again the spirit man quickens or makes alive the mortal body. Romans 8:11.
c) In the resurrection we will have glorified bodies, but still be spirit beings just like Jesus Christ. 1John3:2
2) Adam became a natural or soulish man.
a) He became governed by his five senses and what he could intellectually reason.
1Corinthians 2:9-10,14,16 tell us that the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God. Our goal is Galatians 5:16-18, 24-25.
Verse 16 This I say then, walk in the Spirit-Amplified Bible-responsive to and controlled and guided by the Holy Spirit-and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Verse 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary to one another: so that you cannot do the things that you would.
Verse 18 But if you be led by the Spirit you are not under the law.
Stop! The law activates the flesh. Grace activates and empowers the spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:56 "The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law.” Romans 6:14 “But sin shall no longer have dominion over you because you are not under law but under grace.”
Galatians 5 Verse 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Verse 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
How do we live and walk in the Spirit? I yield to and submit myself to Him-the Holy Spirit. I live and walk by grace-the empowerment of the Spirit. I think on the things of the Spirit. I think on the cross, the word, the blood. Romans 14:17 tells us that the kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. I think on these things. I think on Jesus and the Father’s love for me.
Read Romans 8:1-17. What does it mean to be spiritually minded? It means to think like God thinks. It means to think and act in line with the Word of God. It means to live and function as a spirit dominated being. Many are dominated by what they feel or think instead of being dominated by who they are. When a Christian says that they don’t think that they can make it through a particular situation they are thinking after the natural man. Philippians 4:13 tells us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. 1John 4:4 tells us that greater is he that is in us then he that is in the world. Mark 9:23 tells us that all things are possible to us as we believe Him. Your spirit isn’t weak or sick or defeated. We need to distinguish between spirit, soul and body-not denial, but distinguish. Being spirit dominated is walking and living by faith in God’s word irrespective of what the natural man thinks or says. And that spiritual man is who we really are.
